I was fortunate enough to have Tom at our gym for several months while I was preparing for IBJJF Worlds. I had been attending classes 4-6 times a week, watching videos and learning from others during open mats, but the biggest difference in my physical preparation and mental game planning was the opportunity to take private lessons with Tom. Tom’s knowledge base and his ability to take a question or situation and to offer two or three options for that particular situation is impressive. However, his approach to teaching is the real difference and I would describe his approach as individually focused and thoughtfully tailored to the skill level and particular goals of each student. His ability to watch someone roll and to take what he sees and apply it in a lesson format is so valuable. During each lesson, Tom is able to communicate and break down concepts, positions and moves in a step by step, well thought out/analytical way that makes understanding and retention easy. He always texted a summary of each lesson and things to work on afterwards which helped my training each week. His communication style is constructive and positive. In the end I had a game plan, a series of offensive and defensive moves that fit my style and the confidence to end up winning gold at Worlds. I can’t recommend Tom more as an instructor and as a person to anyone looking to improve their jiu jitsu.
I’m an older brown belt that has been training for about 8.5 years. Prior to doing private lessons with Tom, I felt that my jiu jitsu progress had stalled over the past couple years. Tom’s approach to teaching is highly effective. He dissected my game and taught me techniques that directly apply to my style. He didn’t waste any time trying to add elements that didn’t fit with what I already do. I trained weekly with Tom for several months leading up to Master’s World’s and was very successful at the tournament. I feel that I’ve made more gains in my game over these past few months than I did in the past 2 years largely due to my work with Tom. He is an amazing instructor and should have his own school.
I did some garage sessions with Tom out in his garage near AOJ. Had a great time, his attention to detail and ability to pick up on what key detail or concept I was missing and the ability to explain it to me and give a demonstration was super helpful.
